My quick and easy 3 ingredient matcha ganache comes together in less than a minute. Add a touch of matcha magic to your next dessert with this simple 3 ingredient recipe.

I just love matcha flavored desserts. The earthy flavors of matcha pair so well with so many different types of desserts, giving you a tasty treat that is not overly sweet. Plus, given the health benefits of matcha, in my mind the calories don’t count… right?
That said, matcha desserts are not everyone’s cup of tea. When I’m making cakes or macarons to feed a crowd, I like to offer my guests a variety of flavors to choose from. I’ll often make vanilla or chocolate cupcakes and top them with whipped ganache (that I’ve made in the microwave). Microwaved ganache is so quick and easy to throw together, it means its not at all difficult to make several flavors within a few minutes.
When I do this, I almost always include a matcha ganache in the selection.
What is Matcha Ganache?
This Matcha green tea ganache is a creamy mixture of white chocolate, cream and matcha powder. The earthy flavours of matcha are balanced out by with the sweet creaminess of white chocolate. This ganache has a soft, gooey consistency at room temperature, but hardens in the fridge. It can be whipped up and used as topping for cupcakes, or as a stable filling in a layer cake. It can also be piped straight onto macarons.
Ingredients
This simple recipe uses just 3 ingredients:
- White Chocolate: use real white chocolate for this recipe. By this I mean, look for a white chocolate that contains cocoa butter. This will give your ganache has a rich creamy flavor, and ensure that the chocolate melts and easily combines with the other ingredients.
- Cream: Use heavy cream – aka a cream that is made of 30%-40% fat.
- Matcha Powder
How to make Matcha Ganache?
This recipe couldn’t be easier, simply:
- Heat the chocolate and cream in the microwave until the chocolate melts.
- Add the matcha powder and stir the mixture until it combines to a smooth creamy ganache consistency.
Top Tip: Always use a microwave safe plastic bowl (instead of a glass/cramic bowl) when heating chocolate in the microwave. Reason is that glass and ceramic will heat up in the microwave, which may cause you to accidentally overheat the chocolate. This in turn would cause the chocolate to burn and the ganache to curdle.
A plastic bowl will not heat up in the microwave the same way a glass or ceramic bowl would, making it easier for you to control the amount and pace which the chocolate heats up.
Uses for Matcha Ganache
There are a million and one ways to use this ganache. Here are some of my favorite:
- Use as a filling for matcha macarons.
- Whip the ganache using an electric mixer and use it as a filling between cake layers.
- Whip the ganache and use it in lieu of buttercream on top of cupcakes.
- Decorate layer cakes with a green drip.
- Add a spoonful on top of a bowl of ice cream.
- Eat it by itself, straight from the bowl.
Make this ganache your way
This recipe yields a ganache that is chewy at room temperature and sets hard in the fridge. To adjust the consistency of the ganache, you can either add a little more chocolate (for a firmer consistency) or cream (for a softer ganache).
You can enhance the matcha flavor by adding slightly more powder, however this will absorb some of the moisture from the cream, so you may need to add a little more cream to compensate.
Storage Recommendations
As this ganache contains cream, it should be stored in the fridge. Use it within a week, or before the expiry date on the cream.
